چکیده

We present the kinematics of the molecular gas in the barred spiral galaxy M83 (NGC5236). The study is based on CO(J=1–0 and 2–1) observations with the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). Iso-velocity maps of the entire optical disk, 10 × 10 or 13× 13 kpc, are produced. They show the pattern of an inclined, rotating disk, but also the effects of streaming motions along the spiral arms. A dynamical mass of about 6× 10 M⊙ is estimated by fitting the rotation curve of an exponential disk model to these data. The gas constitutes about 13% of the disk mass. The pattern speed is determined from the residual velocity pattern The locations of various resonances are discussed. The molecular gas velocity dispersion is determined, and a trend of decreasing dispersion with increasing galactocentric radius is found. A total gas (H2+H i+He) mass surface density map is presented, and compared to the critical density for star formation of an isothermal gaseous disk. The critical density is exceeded in the spiral arms, but not in the interarm regions. The locations of Giant Molecular Associations (GMAs) and H ii regions are consistent with this scenario of dynamically induced star

Molecular Gas around the Double Nucleus in M 83

The center of M83, a barred starburst galaxy with a double nucleus, has been observed in the CO(J=2–1) and CO(J=3–2) lines with the Submillimeter Array. The molecular gas shows a distribution and kinematics typical for barred galaxies at ∼kpc radii, but reveals unusual kinematics around the double nucleus in the central ∼300 pc. Our CO velocity data show that the visible nucleus in M83 is at le...

The molecular gas in (some) early type galaxies holds important clues to the history and the future of these galaxies. In pursuit of these clues we have used the BIMA millimeter array to map CO emission in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 83 and NGC 2320 and to search for CO emission from the S0 galaxy NGC 5838. We also present V and R images of NGC 83 and NGC 2320 which trace their dust distr...

Stars , H II regions , and shocked gas in the bar of NGC 1530

We analyse long slit spectra taken along and perpendicular to the bar of the galaxy NGC 1530. Our data show that the H ii regions, around young massive stars that form in the shock-compressed gas, share the same kinematics as the molecular gas in the x 2 orbits at the center of the galaxy. Along the bar, the H ii regions are in the post-shock zone, downstream of the dust lanes that contain mole...

VERTICAL VELOCITY DISPERSION OF THE IONIZED GAS IN NGC 3938 J. JIMENEZ-VICENTE, E. BATTANER and C. PORCEL

We have studied the kinematics of the ionized gas in the nearly face-on galaxy NGC 3938 by means of observations made with the Fabry–Perot interferometer TAURUS II at the William Herschel Telescope, using the Hα line. We have been able to produce high-resolution velocity and velocity-dispersion maps which allow us to make a detailed study of the kinematics of the ionized gas. In particular we h...

Molecular Gas in Elliptical Galaxies: Distribution and Kinematics

I present interferometric images (∼7 resolution) of CO emission in five elliptical galaxies and nondetections in two others. These data double the number of elliptical galaxies whose CO emission has been fully mapped. The sample galaxies have 10 to 5×10 M⊙ of molecular gas distributed in mostly symmetric rotating disks with diameters of 2 to 12 kpc. Four out of the five molecular disks show rem...
